Ausstellungsformat mit öffentlicher Druckwerkstatt | Stadthaus Ulm / Wilhelmsburg Ulm (kuratiert von Silvia Keppler/Ulm und Daniel Neufeld/Guadalajara, MX)
Mit 18 Positionen mexikanischer KünstlerInnen aus Guadalajara/Mexiko wird ein Einblick in die aktuelle Grafik-Szene Mexikos gegeben. Der Animismus indigener Kulturen und das zyklische Denken von Tod und Wiedergeburt begegnen aktuellen Themen wie der politischen Dimension des Drogenhandels, den Fragen sozialer und ethnischer Gerechtigkeit und dem Post-Kolonialismus. „Cholos“, Azteken-Könige, Ikonen und Symbole präkolonialer Kulturen, mythologische Figuren und Motive der Pop-Kultur wie die lucha liebre und die Lotterie sind Teil eines Ikonografischen Vokabulars das von einer jungen Generation von KünstlerInnen neu interpretiert wird, sie verweben Tradition mit Gegenwart. Bildzitate europäischen Ursprungs wie Grünewalds und Beckmanns mischen sich in das Vokabular und spiegeln die europäische Kunstgeschichte aus einer nicht-europäischen Perspektive.
Durch die gnadenlose Motivation der mexikanischen KünstlerInnen hat sich das Ausstellungsformat während der Planungsphase in seiner Dimension vervierfach. Ein weiterer Ausstellungsraum mußte her, es konnte neben der Wilhelmsburg das Stadthaus Ulm gewonnen werden.
Begleitet wurde Ausstellung von öffentlichen Druckwerkstätten die von mexikanischen KünstlerInnen betreut wurden.
rútas plásticas – öffentliche Druckwerkstatt „la chayotera“ zu Gast in Ulm
124 Gemeinden umfasst Guadalajara, jede ausgestattet mit Kirche, Krankenhaus und Kulturzentrum. In Realität fehlt es an Geld und Konzepten, die Kulturzentren liegen brach. Für den Künstler Óscar Basulto ist die kulturelle Verwahrlosung in den ländlichen Regionen ein Anlaß für die Gründung des Netzwerks „rutas plásticas“. Bereits etablierte KünstlerInnen betreuen Druckwerkstätten in den indigenen Gemeinden und geben ihr Wissen weiter, sie beleben die Kulturzentren und geben den Kindern, Jugendlichen und Älteren ein Medium an die Hand um ihre Kultur „festzuhalten“ und ihre Erzählung zu bebildern. Einige der jungen Grafikerinnen haben dank des Engagements von Óscar Basulto ihre Kunst bereits in Deutschland ausgestellt . Zu sehen waren rund 50 Grafiken aus der Werkstatt „la chayotera“
Under Pressure: the pressure the press needs to print, the eighties hit by Queen & David Bowie, the pressure of living in a country of corrupt politicians and organized crime, the pressure of conquest and economic distress, the pressure of being an artist and trying to make a living, the pressure that there’s never enough time, and that what little time we have doesn’t stop and only eludes us, the pressure of organizing an art exhibition in other country, political and social pressure, the pressure of having to subscribe to societal norms. “Its the terror of knowing what this world is about, watching some good friends screaming: Let me out!”
This exhibition, made possible thanks to the invitation and management of german artist Silvia Keppler, brings together a selection of more than 80 graphic works and an array of different kinds of printing techniques of 18 artists who currently live and work in Jalisco, Mexico, Artists with distinguished careers, each one comes from a different background (from art or design schools, or self taught, or directly from grafiti & street art). They work in different techniques and vary in their themes and subject; nevertheless, there is a unifying narrative that joins them. This can be the use of symbols or elements of what is “mexican”, or “national”, which in some works are very obvious, but in other cases are only subtly suggested. This show can be seen as a sampling for foreign audiences of contemporary printmaking in Mexico, which has a long historical tradition and which nowadays enjoys great popularity (evidenced by the large number of workshops and number artists of various ages producing art with printing techniques)
Mexico’s actual graphic production can’t escape its tradition, and is nourished
by the tipical and popular icons & images of this country, so we meet again with aztec & mayan idols, with “cholos” and sirens, masked wrestlers, figures from the lottery game, skulls and devils, with masks and folkloric dancers, with religious images tatooed to the skin; and also with the legacy of surrealism, and the protest and the reality of political and social issues. The exposing artists will take us through a visual journey that can go from precolombine simbols to images from a dream, from figurative realism to expresionism and abstraction. With a variety of topics and techniques, the show can give us an idea of what is happening in the contemporary graphic art scene in Mexico. Is about a new generation of artists, that is using this ancient process, learning from the tradition, but also adding a new impulse by experimenting and making new images of todays subjects.
Along with this exhibition there is a show of the work of children who are beginning to learn in community workshops. These workshops are managed by the association Rutas Plasticas A.C., who has been working for the cultural development of small and rural communities for about eight years now. Rutas Plásticas A.C. works with small towns and ethnic groups that are far away from large urban centers and who have been ignored or forgotten by official cultural programs. It will be a rich experience to see the work of these young artists, with their lives and surroundings portrayed in their prints, together with the boldness and freshness of their naïveté.
